I observed the first of the seasons dragonflies (Hudsonian White-faces) in our yard a couple of weeks ago. However, today was the first day I got out to photograph odes.
Mid-afternoon, with the temperature in the upper 70s F and the skies mostly sunny, I prowled the yard and the woods road which heads down to the lake across the road from our driveway.
The most common dragonflies present were chalk-fronted corporals*. However, there were also small numbers of Hudsonian Whitefaces present. Most of the whitefaces have already headed back to the water to breed.
I also saw a few clubtails and was able to photograph a single individual. Clubtails spend the majority of their time in flight, patrolling a territory and are thus hard to photograph.
There were very few damselflies present and they seemed to be mostly (if not exclusively) Aurora Damsels.
All-in-all a good first outing.
* This morning, I rode my bicycle down Hattie Brown Road (sans camera, of course). There were literally hundreds of chalk-fronted corporals in the sunny spots along the road. It was an amazing sight.
