Long-time readers know that the large majority of my landscape work is black and white. However, sometimes a landscape is all about the colors nature presents. Here are seven photographs that ‘needed’ to be in color.
In the digital age, where most cameras capture data in full color and software makes it easy to covert images to black and white, many folks make the color or monochrome decision after tripping the shutter. However, I generally know before I make an exposure if I am going to present an image as color or not. It is a very rare occurrence that I change my mind when I get to the computer.
The image I’ve titled ‘Lone Tree’ falls into this category. I thought black and white initially but the contrast between the tree and the ground just did not work. So, because it is an otherwise interesting (to me) composition, here it is in color.
The two ‘Albertan Skies’ photos were taken minutes and about 180 degrees apart while listening to thunder as the sun set. We got no rain despite the thunder.
The two photos of canola fields are of a subject we saw lots of as we drove across the Canadian prairie. There were fields with other crops but the large majority of cropland was planted with canola.
“Canola Field” reminded me of the many photos of the Palousse (sp?) that I have seen. See you CAN do color!!

Loved the big sky image at the end. I remember a motorcycle ride thru canola fields in Germany — so striking! The sunrise in Anacortes matches the profile of Mount Baker. During WWII, my father was stationed on Whidbey Island, and we lived in temporary military housing in Anacortes. I remember my mother commenting on seeing Mount Baker out the window.
