On Saturday, my friend Victor and I headed to the Middlebury (VT) College Museum of Art to view an exhibit of photographs titled “David Plowden: Portraits of America“. Of course, we both took cameras with us and made a few stops along the way when something caught one of our eyes. The first four photographs shown below a result of this trip.
On Sunday, I attended a presentation at the Antrim Historical Society by Dan Hurlin. Dan, a native son of Antrim, is a puppeteer and professor of art at Sarah Lawrence College.
His presentation included the showing of a film about his production of a piece titled “Disfarmer” (excerpt from the NYT website). Mike Disfarmer was an “unknown” portrait photographer in a small Arkansas town whose work was rediscovered in the 1970s.*
The last photo in this post is of three of the six puppets (made by Dan) depicting Mike Disfarmer. The shrinking of the man is a key part of the production hence the different size puppets.
* The story (photographer whose work was discovered after their death and hailed as a ‘genius’) of Mike Disfarmer is similar to the more recent (and perhaps better known) story of Vivian Maier.
