Sometimes a great wildlife photograph just falls into your lap… just be observant and have your camera nearby. No planning nor travel needed.
This afternoon, Joan and I were having lunch on our breezeway as is usual in nice weather. We were watching a number of large dragonflies, darners of some sort, patrolling the yard. Just as we finished eating, I watched a darner mating wheel alight on a branch of the blueberry bush that is roughly eight feet from where we were sitting. I ran for my camera which was still rigged for odes (with the 300 mm lens and extension tube) but sitting upstairs in my studio.
Fortunately, the pair of insects was still in the same place when I arrived back on the breezeway. I eased out of the door and was able to make seventeen exposures (varying in exposure and depth of field) from three angles before I spooked the critters.
I processed three of the frames. Here is one of them; exposed at 1:47 and it is 2:45 as a write this. Just an hour from ‘click’ to ‘post’ and I wasn’t rushing… ain’t technology wonderful!
