We spent the past several days visiting my mother in Maryland; it was her 92nd birthday! Circumstances required us to get a late start on the drive south so we stopped for the night in Pennsylvania. This gave us some ‘free’ time on Friday so we stopped in Gettysburg for several hours.
The woman who sold us our tickets asked if we had visited before. I replied that I had been to Gettysburg as an elementary school student and that would have been roughly sixty years ago. Her reply was “Welcome back!”
We took in the movie and the cyclorama in the visitor center and then, after a quick lunch, we spent roughly two hours walking around one small section of the battlefield. I made a few photos of course!
In addition to the expected cannons and monuments, I was fascinated by the open grown trees. Here in, heavily wooded, New Hampshire open grown trees are few and far between.
Really nice landscapes … love the trees. Good choice to render in monochrome.
Antietam Battlefield is near me. There are several witness trees there. They stood at the time of the battle, Sept, 17, 1862. They are profoundly moving. Perhaps you can visit Antietam when you visit again. And stop over for tea.
Frank, I never received an email about this trip – glad I stumbled upon it.
Spent a few days in Gettysburg and Antietam as well. I was impressed by the sheer volume of monuments strewn around the park. Looking forward to a return trip one of these days.
