Last Thursday was the warmest day we have had in a long time. The temperature was in the mid-40s F and it was nice a sunny. I headed out late morning specifically to photograph for the first time in more than a month. I stayed pretty local and visited some favorite spots in Deering, Hillsborough, Henniker and Bradford.
I find that this time of year I can find good light for photography even in midday; by “good” I mean light raking the landscape at a low angle.
A fun story about the first two photos. Skip if you are not interested in “photographer talk”!
I was contemplating where to stand in order to make “Winter Pasture” (the first photo of this series) when all of a sudden a flock of turkey appeared out of the brush at frame right and marched rapidly across the open ground of the pasture at quite a distance away. I had a moderate telephoto lens (70-200 mm) mounted on the camera. This was not ideal for photographing the distant birds. A longer lens would have been ideal but the turkeys were moving quickly. There was no time for me to walk back to the truck and switch lenses. I used the gear in my hands knowing that I would need to crop and that the resulting image might not be ideal.
However, I was using the Sony mirrorless camera which has way more pixels that I usually need. In this case though, because of all of those “extra” pixels, I was able crop away from the top and bottom of the frame and refine the composition. The result is a file that will still print about 26 inches wide (and 8 inches tall). Perfectly acceptable!
